 Asian Elephants

Physical Features

Asian elephants are typically huge and gray,. Their colour allows them to blend effectively in their shady habitat. Asian elephants can grow up to 6. 4 metres long and 3 metres tall. It can also weigh up to 5000 kilograms. Despite their size elephants can walk silently.

Food
The Asian Elephant is an herbivore. It eats bamboo, berries, mangoes, shrubs, trees, bananas, wood, apples, wild rice and coconuts. Since their bodies make use of only half of the food they consume, the elephant must eat between 330 and 350 pounds of food each day for their survival.

The Asian Elephant lives with thick forests and places where there is an abundant supply of food. The Asian also likes muddy areas where they can cool off during the hot summers.


Asian elephants are found in India, Sri Lanka, Myanmar (Burma), Indonesia, Thailand, Camodia, Vietname, Laos, Malaysia, Nepal, Bangladesh and southern China. 


African Forest Elephant

Physical Features


The African Forest Elephants are typically smaller than the African Bush Elephants. They have downward pointing, straight tusks; smaller, rounder ears and also longer and narrower jaws (mandibles).  The African Forest Elephants (AFE)  also have less number of toe nails.The male AFE rarely exceeds 2.5 metres tall compared to the 4 metres tall African Bush Elephant.
 
Food 
The African Forest Elephant is an herbivore and commonly eats leaves, fuit, bark and occasianly mineral licks. 
Habitat
The African Forest Eephant is a forest dwelling elephant. They are found near the Congo Basin.

African Bush Elephant


Physical Features

Food 
The African Bush Elephant's diet varies on it's habitat.  Elephants living in forests, grasslands or partial deserts eat different types and proportions of herbs, trees and shrubbery leaves. Elephants who live in Lake Kariba eat underwater plants. 

Habitat
The African Bush Elephant lives in areas of South Africa and Sahara Desert.
